Miller Takes 3rd Place at Regional Tournament
Robinson Varsity Closes Successful Season
Brenna Miller capped a very successful 4-year career with the Robinson HS varsity tennis program with her 4th straight trip to the Region III 3A tennis tournament in Bryan. Although the tournament didn’t end with a chance for her to compete in the state tournament, Brenna played a very good series of matches to finish in 3rd place and finish as the girls’ singles alternate to the UIL state tournament for Region III. Miller closed her senior year with an impressive individual singles match record of 40-8.
In the regional tournament, Miller completely dominated her first opponent from Mexia 6-0, 6-0. The quarterfinal opponent from Sealy, district 24-3A, gave a bit of a push back in the first set, but Brenna again gained complete control and finished the match with a 6-4, 6-0 win. Her semifinal match was against a foreign exchange student from Austria who qualified from district 17-3A. The Chapel Hill senior had eliminated the #4 seed in the tournament before facing Miller in the semifinals. Brenna took a strong 1st set, winning 6-1 and followed with a tougher 2nd set 6-4 to advance to the finals of the tournament.
Brenna lost the finals to the district 24-3A champion, a tremendous freshman from Tomball Memorial, 1-6, 0-6 and ended up having to play a playback for 2nd place against the #1 seed from Bullard, who had also lost to the player from Tomball. In the playback, Miller never really got untracked and was not able to break through the playing style of the Bullard girl, eventually losing 2-6, 0-6 to finish in 3rd place.
Also competing for the Rockets in the tournament were boys’ doubles Justin Kramer (SR)/Nikki Bright (JR). In their first trip to regionals as partners, Kramer/Bright dismantled the district 21-3A champions from West Orange Stark 6-2, 6-0 in the opening round. Their win, however, moved them out to the quarterfinals to face the #1 seeded team from Groesbeck. Groesbeck, who qualified for the state tournament for the 4th year in a row, ended up beating the RHS duo, but not until after an extremely tight first set. The final 3-6, 0-6 score is not really indicative of how close the games were throughout the match.

In girls’ doubles, the all sophomore team of Kayla Hill-Johnson/McKenna Kramer also won their first round, but in a much closer match. Facing the district 22-3A champions from Huffman-Hargrave, Kayla and McKenna dropped the first set 5-7. With their backs to the wall, the duo stormed back to take the 2nd set 6-2 to face a 3rd and decisive set. Finally, a 3rd set score of 6-4 was enough to advance the girls to the quarterfinal round to face the #3 seeded team from Bellville. Bellville, who ended up qualifying for state as the 2nd place team in the region, was simply too experienced for the young RHS pair and defeated Hill-Johnson/Kramer 2-6, 2-6.
